Nothing is worse than spending money every month on bikini waxes but still having bumps and in-grown hairs.

Clogged pores and hair follicles are usually to blame — which is why exfoliating (both before and after waxing) is so important, says Luciana, a seasoned aesthetician at Brazilian Wax by Andreia in Alpharetta, GA.

Right before waxing, gently exfoliate with a loofah and/or a mild scrub such as Bliss Lemon & Sage Body Scrub $36 Bliss. Immediately after waxing, Luciana suggests applying a salicylic-acid-based product like Tend Skin ($20; which helps calm itching as well as irritation. Continue exfoliating for at least three days afterward to stop ingrown hairs from forming.

Other helpful tips by Luciana to keep your bikini zone smooth and bump free:

  • Your hair should be at least a 1/4 to 1/2 inch long before waxing.
  • Do not drink before waxing. While you may think that a cocktail before waxing (for liquid courage!) will help alleviate the pain of a Brazilian wax, drinking alcohol before any waxing procedure may do more harm than good. Alcohol thins the blood and it will not clot as well after treatment, potentially causing pinprick bleeding, which may result in a scab which ultimately, can result in an ingrown hair!  Skip the coffee too. Caffeine has the same effect.
  • Plan to wax after your menstrual cycle because your body will be less sensitive.
  • It may take 24 hours for any redness or soreness to disappear. During that time, avoid exfoliation, cream irritants and excessive heat.
  • Do not wax if you use Accutane, Retin-A, are sunburned, using other topical AHA’s, or medications that will make your skin reactive to waxing.
  • You must wax consistently every 4 – 6 weeks for the first few times. This will give your hair time to begin growing on the same hair cycle. Don’t shave in between waxing appointments.
  • Immediately after waxing, clean the area that was waxed with a gentle cleanser to remove any traces of wax and prevent bacteria from wreaking havoc on your newly hair-free skin.  Apply a thin layer of Neosporin or a similar product to help keep pores bacteria free.
  • Avoid restrictive or tight clothing for the rest of the day after a wax.
  • DO NOT go tanning for 24-48 hours after waxing.
