How Do I Become Happier?

by Laura Kronen on September 30, 2013

girl in fieldIs it possible that in this day and age people need lessons on how to be happy? The answer is a resounding yes!

Despite what magazines, TV and social media would have you believe, happiness does not come from wealth and material possessions. It also isn’t associated with how good looking you are or even intelligence. Happiness is very misunderstood and also seemingly elusive. But,when sought in an appropriate and realistic way, achieving happiness requires nothing more than practicing a few simple disciplines on a daily basis.

Taking lessons, or working with a Life Coach is not an indication of something problematic or failure, no more than seeking a financial advisor for investment advice or a lawyer for legal issues.

Happiness means different things to different people.  For me, happiness embraces all the positive emotions in my life – from contentment and satisfaction, to joy and excitement. Happiness is a positive state of being characterized by these types of emotions. But many people say that happiness does not come naturally to them.  That is irrelevant.  If you want to achieve greater happiness, you can -IF you want to find out what to do and then actually do it.

How many of you were born able to drive a car?  None of you, right?  Despite this, you eventually put in the effort to learn how to drive and probably practiced until you did it well.  Why?  Because driving makes your life easier.  Walking (which, incidentally, you didn’t know how to do when you were born either) is not always an option. Happiness can be looked at the same way.  If achieving happiness is important to you, whether it comes naturally not, shouldn’t stop you from finding out what to do and then practicing it until you are really good at it.

So whether you get help from a friend, family member, or a professional Life Coach, you can learn to be happier, just like you learned to drive.

This is the first installment in a 3 part series.  Keep reading Be You Only Better to find your happiness! Part 2 is right here!
