An Interview with Emi-Jay

by Laura Kronen on January 15, 2013

the best hair bandsHave you heard about Emi-Jay hair ties?  If you haven’t, let me tell you a little bit about them. They are the perfect hair tie.  They come in a million styles and colors. Everyone is knocking them off, but they are the best.  There is something to be said for being the “first”.
I had the opportunity to interview the young (like, real young!) entrepreneurs who founded Emi-Jay: Emily and Julianne:
founders of Emi-Jay
Here’s what I asked:
1.  You are so young, where did your business savvy come from?

Both of our moms have always been entrepreneurial so it was modeled to us at a young age (we run Emi-Jay with our moms now) but Julianne and I started making hair accessories because we noticed an increasing trend in hair clips and headbands on television and among our friends at school. From there, our moms took us to buy supplies that we started to experiment with (we literally sat on the floor of Julianne’s room hot-glue-gunning and playing around with fabrics and gems for hours), but with no intention of starting an actual company. However, celebrity hair stylist Chris McMillan (a friend of my mom’s) was searching for the perfect hair tie, and since Julianne and I were already in the midst of experimenting with materials, we tried dying elastics in solid colors that we eventually gave to Chris. From there, he put one of our signature black hair ties on Jennifer Aniston for a movie premiere (where she was photographed on the red carpet) and that gave us our “big break”, so to speak. Months later, magazines began contacting us and Emi-Jay was born!

2.  What was the tipping point when you knew success was about to happen?  Was it a press piece, a store that carried them, a celebrity that wore your product and got the name out there?  or something else?

Seeing Jennifer Aniston wearing one of our hair ties (at a movie premiere in 2009) or being contacted by Marie Claire magazine to feature the ties in their magazine before we even had a website set up were both equally exciting tipping points for myself and Julianne.

3.  Fill in the blank.  Happiness is ______?

Doing what you love and loving what you do-(via Emily Matson)

4. What’s next on your to-do list?
We hope to keep growing Emi-Jay as a brand and expand into making more accessories, perhaps even branching out into other areas of the market such as beauty products. And we hope to partner with other brands, too! Our Emi-Jay for Splendid collection is hitting stores this week!

5. If you could get a message across to the world, what would it be?

To follow your passion and don’t let your age (or inexperience!) act as an obstacle.

OK, so the moms of these talented girls were connected in the entertainment industry knowing Chris McMillan, but we all know networking is the key to success, so always take the opportunity to see if your friends and family can help!  But true entrepreneurship is having the ability to take an idea and make it a reality. So many of us have ideas and let them die.  Let these young girls be an inspiration to you to follow through on your dreams.  It’s the ONLY way you are going to make them happen!
