75 Non-Resolution Resolutions You Can Make for 2017

happy new yearWelcome to 2017. While 45 percent of Americans set New Year’s resolutions, only 8 percent are successful at sticking to them. What are you going to do to make this year your best yet? And no, we’re not talking about unrealistic (yet well-intentioned) promises to yourself such as going to the gym every single day, stopping cursing, eliminating chocolate (because that’s just stupid), quitting coffee or going to church every Sunday.

The thing with New Year’s resolutions is that they’re often simply unrealistic or have too much expectation behind them. With that in mind, here are 75 easy New Year’s “non-resolution” resolutions you can actually stick to. Most don’t cost anything and require minimal effort — but could have a big, positive impact on your life, and the lives of those around you. Be YOU Only BETTER!

  1. Start each day with positive affirmations. Say them as if you believe they are already true.
  2. Take the stairs instead of elevators and escalators to get daily exercise.
  3. Schedule “me” time to turn off your cell phone, computer and other electronic devices.
  4. Don’t text and drive. Ever.
  5. Sign up for focus groups. They are easy money and usually interesting.
  6. Be punctual—try to be on time or early to every event you attend. Your host will appreciate it.
  7. Make more personal phone calls instead of sending emails and texts.
  8. Do something out of your comfort zone. Every day.
  9. Speak up and share your opinion. Let the world hear your voice. 
  10. Learn something about the strangers that you encounter – you’ll realize you probably have more in common than you think.
  11. Sign up for a dance, art or exercise class. Something that keeps your brain active or your blood pumping.
  12. Start running or walking a little further each time you exercise.
  13. Enjoy the seclusion and solitude of eating a meal alone. Really taste your food.

  15. Turn off the Internet and television and read a book before falling asleep.
  16. Make more eye contact during conversations. Engage yourself.
  17. Pay off your credit cards. Then use them for emergencies only by removing them from your wallet. Only spend with whatever cash you bring with you.
  18. Refrain from gossiping and listening to gossip. Control jealousy.  It brings out the worst in us.
  19. Make healthy food swaps when you can. Substitute soy or almond milk for dairy and try using coconut or olive oil instead of butter and margarine.
  20. Choose organic when possible and spare your body the harmful pesticides. But don’t make yourself or other people crazy doing it. 
  21. Try portion control when eating meals. Use smaller plates and put leftovers in the refrigerator immediately to prevent eating a second helping.
  22. Be more open and communicative with others. You’ll likely gain more respect and cooperation from them.
  23. Get more vitamin D by taking some time to spend outside. The sun makes you feel so good but don’t forget the sunscreen!
  24. Stop late-night snacking: Those calories turn to fat. 
  25. Floss your teeth more often. And then smile more often.
  26. Find what you love doing and do it more.
  27. Spend a few hours a week enjoying time with your family. Don’t allow any external distractions.
  28. Don’t litter. Especially out of your car window.
  29. De-clutter your home a few times a year. Get rid of anything you don’t use or haven’t worn in a year. Donate furniture and clothes that you no longer use to those in need.
  30. Learn something new every day. Even if it is just a word.
  31. Start saving for a vacation today. You’ll be surprised at how fast it will add up.  Also, throw all loose change into a jar at the end of each day to add to the kitty. 
  32. Invest in your retirement.
  33. Incorporate more vegetables in your meals. Half your plate should be filled with them.
  34. Make a big deal out of family and friend’s birthdays No, it is not “just another day.” Celebrate life!
  35. Play with your pets. They are instant stress relievers.
  36. Clean up your computer desktop daily.  Organize pictures.  And get all of them off of your iPhone.  You will not be a happy person if you lose your phone.
  37. Pick up a new hobby. What do you want to try? What sounds fun?  Yes adults should have fun too!
  38. Make a spa day once a month – even if it’s pampering yourself at home.
  39. Help others by volunteering. The best feeling in the world is selflessly giving back.
  40. Get organized. Start with your closet.
  41. Do a safety check of your house – replace smoke alarm batteries, check locks on windows and doors.
  42. Stop procrastinating.  Here are some ways how.  Read it now.  Don’t wait till later.
  43. Use more of your kitchen appliances – pull out the slow-cooker, stand mixer, waffle maker and juicer. And yes, even the Twinkie maker.
  44. Plan birthday and holiday gifts ahead of time to save with sales and deals.
  45. For everything negative you say, say two things that are positive. Think before you speak.
  46. Eat more high quality dark chocolate – it’s loaded with antioxidants and worth the price difference in taste.
  47. Listen to more of your favorite type of music. Music boosts spirits, helps reduce depression and can instantly change your mood.
  48. Revise comfort foods by adding a healthy twist. Add some veggies into that mac & cheese!
  49. Invite more friends and families over for wine or dinner or a night of playing games.
  50. Buy local. Support your local coffee shop instead of Starbucks. Support local small businesses and keep your money where you live.
  51. Convince yourself that you are a morning person. Schedule your day to be productive and plan to get the majority of important business completed in the morning when you’re alert and energized.
  52. Drink more water.  You’ve heard that one before.
  53. Get on a solid sleep schedule. Listen to your natural sleeping patterns and adjust accordingly. Aim for seven hours of sleep each night.
  54. Prepare ahead of time with snacks on the go to prevent fast food drive thrus. Pack a variety of snacks from dried fruit, nuts, energy bars and fruit to help make healthy choices while on the go.
  55. Replace sugar with natural sweeteners like agave and honey.
  56. Bring your lunch from home more often. You’ll save money and guarantee healthy food choices.
  57. Minimize the risk of getting sick by washing your hands frequently, eating more fruits and leafy greens, taking a multivitamin and staying active.
  58. Identify the things that make you stressed during the day and take action. Create a list of things that are in your control and take small steps to change them.
  59. Don’t let things out of your control overwhelm you. Realize there are certain obstacles to challenge us, but never defeat us.
  60. Improve your quality of life by getting more involved in your community and connecting with nature.
  61. Realize that the only failure in life is giving up.
  62. Eat five new foods this year. Have you tried kale, quinoa, coconut oil or almond butter yet?
  63. Track your goals. Don’t be too specific on deadlines or set yourself up for failure. Try to do one thing a day to propel yourself in the right direction.
  64. Keep a journal to jot down anything that comes to mind, like song lyrics, memories and ideas.
  65. Listen more in conversations.  Don’t just be waiting for your opportunity to speak.
  66. Learn others’ resolutions and help them achieve their goals.
  67. Give someone a compliment once a day, but really mean it.
  68. Rearrange your furniture every once in a while to create a new living space.
  69. Clean your face every night before going to sleep. And moisturize.  Your future face will thank you.
  70. Make your bed everyday.  And keep the dishes out of the sink. These simple chores are an easy way to positively impact your happiness.
  71. Take the time to clean as you go and clear away any clutter that has accumulated over time.
  72. Not everything is going to be easy or enjoyable, but try to appreciate the challenge and look on the brighter side.
  73. Spend money on things that create memories. And shoes and handbags.  Those are all worth it.
  74. Before you go to bed, write your to-do list and put all of your “tasks” out of your head and release them on paper to start fresh in the morning.
  75. Give yourself more credit. Look at everything you have accomplished and celebrate the small victories.
